16s hunting case. stem wind, stem set. stem is at 3 o clock position. # on the movement is 62655. under the number is an engraved line drawing of what i think is a horse, done kind of in an almost paleolithic style, like in cave paintings. under that is a capital letter L. there is no mention of jewels on the movement, but i think i see four.

Hi

According to the on-line data base yours was made in 1881. This lists the watches as adjusted to Heat and cold, which is what the horse indicates.

The L means it is an "L" size which is near 16 for more standard American Watches.

Here is a link ot the data base

i have looked around a lot. most people when they talk about howard watches are talking about watches by e. howard. i am pretty sure this one is r. howard. is there any relationship between the two? maybe i just read it wrong and what i have is e. howard. i thought it said r. howard.

If it has a horse on the movement, it is E. Howard, not R. Howard.

Without the horse description, it could be some kind of private label.

pph:

Perhaps you've seen too many Ron Howard pictures.

Phh, your E.Howard watch, according to the factory records, was finished Feb. 11, 1888 and was sent to the E. Howard New York office, to be sold, the following month, March 1888. It is listed as a grade #5 and is noted as having a Patent Regulator with nickel plates and was adjusted to Heat&Cold by a Mr. Albert Horton who along with H. N. Allen did almost all the adjusting in that time frame.

Phh,

Try using a ten power glass or comparing to another movement!
