Mr Goldberg was undoubtedly a jeweler, a dry-goods merchant, or some other retailer, who contracted to have some watches made with a private label name. He was almost certainly not the maker of the watch. I can not find a reference to Mr Goldberg or this watch in an of my material on private labels, but that is not surprising. New names turn up every day, because so many people thought they could make money having their own brand of watch. R.W. Sears did, and look at Sears and Roebuck today.

Dee:

For us to be able to help you, it would be nice to know what is marked on the movement (the "works"). Please post again, describing all those markings.

Even better would be a picture. If you can take, or obtain a digital picture of the movement, posting it would most likely enable us to recognize the watch's manufacturer from the shape of the plates. If you are unable to post the picture, you can attach it to an e-mail to me (by clicking on the speeding letter at the top of this post) and I'll post it for you.

Oh, if you have trouble opening the case, have a look at: How To Open A Pocket Watch Case (http://www.knology.net/~ksinger/opencase.txt)

Good luck,
Kent
