Just got a nice 1896 columbus 6s 7j w/ornate hunting case. Inside is an american flag and below it, boxed is the word AMERICA.
Gold plated? Gold filled? Gold ______?
Or could this have been used to distinguish between Swiss and American made cases, but still no info on quality.

Lars,
In the "Trademarks" book by Roy Ehrhardt, published by Heart of America Press, http://www.hoapress.com/pwdesc.htm, America is listed as a quality grade used by the Joseph Fahys & Co. of Sag Harbor, NY during the last half of the 19th century. It also shows an American flag surrounded by a double circle containing the words "America - Pat. April 22,79" These cases were Gold rolled plate, warranteed for five years. This was the only listing for "America" I could locate as a trade or quality case mark.
