I am missing a chime hammer head on a 5 tube clock. What's the best way of finding a hammer that will work? I have attached some pictures of one of the hammers that remain. Also any advice on what type of leather and how to replace the leather for the heads would be great.

Thanks!
Ryan

rdav,

Any thin pliable leather will do. I have used the unworn parts of old driving gloves.

Yours seems to be the type where the leathers are simply gathered around the tip and held with a wire. First, use a piece of rod a little bigger than the hammer's nose to make a loop of wire and twist the ends together. Place the leather over the nose and push the little loop you just made down over the nose. Then tighten and trim the wire and leather as necessary. You will quickly see why the lether needs to be both thin and plyable.

Good luck, Willie X

You can also use a slightly thicker leather (like shoe uppers) cut into strips about 5/16" wide. Same general instructions as post #3. This will give you a softer sound and last longer.
