YOUr serial number ius listed as a 940. This is a 21 Jewel railroad grade 18 size watch. Approx date is 1905.

These are very fine but common. That they are this fine and so common is a tribute to a great manufacturing.

It should be lever set and the engraving in gold. It is surprising that it does not say 940 on the movement.

Thank you for responding so quickly Dr.Jon.As for it not having the numbers 940 0n the movement has really puzzled me.It's a great running watch and I carry it everyday.

That is very interesting about the Railroad requiring that the 940 have a marked movement.I guess mine would have been"GRANDFATHERED" in if I worked for the railroad at that time maybe?

No grandfathering necessary. Your watch would have always been a Railroad watch!

Right!

One has to read the rules carefully. Usually, the new-fangled requirements, such as lever-setting and adjustement to five positions, came under a heading entitled something like: "The following schedule will govern the standard for NEW WATCHES, ..." whereas those watches which had been previously accepted, prior to the new rules being published, fell under the section entitled: "The minimum standard of excellence of OLD WATCHES NOW IN SERVICE shall be of a grade equal to ..."

Your 940 went to the Hamilton Finishing Department on October 8, 1904. Your was has a low enough serial number that the early Hamilton ledger books should show it. If you are a member of NAWCC, you can request the specifics on this watch including the day it was finished, the day it was sold and to whom (wholesale).

The link to the information request is under the Library and Research Center link on the NAWCC home page. The actual request form is at http://nawcc.org/Library/libreqfrm.htm

Non-members can request research services also, but they must submit in writing and there is a fee for the service.

Your request had not come into the library as of Friday, June 27, but I thought I would give you a headstart. (Unless somebody else beat me too it.)

Hamilton 454997 is a grade 940 completed on December 12, 1904 and sold on January 21, 1905 to J. W. Forsinger of Chicago. I found over 21 entries on this and adjacent pages for J.W. Forsinger of both Chicago and New York for 940s. He must have been a big wholesaler.

I photocopied the page and it will be included in our official response to your request.
