I am looking at a size 6 waltham marked as a bartlet but not listed in Shugarts book. Is this an unusual watch?

Can you provide the serial number? Are you sure it's a 6 size and not a slightly larger 8 size? And is it actually marked "Bartlet" and not "Bartlett"? If it only has one "t" it might be a Swiss fake.

Barry

Hi Barry, Thanks for the reply. My mistake, it is spelled w 2 t's. The s/n is 12796847. According to the book it definetly appears to be a model 1890. I do have a pic I could email. Can you tell me waht the s/n indcates?
Thanks Pete
Pete:
Are you sure about the serial number? My book shows the number 12796847 as being an 18s 1883 model. Due to this, I would suggest that you post a picture if possible.

Hey, Pete! Are you sure that's the serial number inscrbed on the actual movement [the "works"] and not just the case? The cases were made separatley from the movements [often by completely different companies] and therefore bear separate serial numbers.

Barry

That serial is listed in the Waltham Serial Number and Grade list as being a 6 size, Model #1890, "Seaside" Grade with 7-15 jewels. Having said that, the watch in the picture you sent me is clearly marked "P.S. Bartlett"! Here's the picture for everyone else to see:

The serial number definitely looks like 12756847 to me, and the movement certainly looks like that of a 6 size, Model #1890 to me as well. And yet it's marked "P.S. Bartlett". Shugart doesn't list a 6 size "P.S. Bartlett" at all. Ehrhardt, however [in his "Waltham Pocket Watch Identification and Price Guide"], does list a 6 size, Model #1890 "P.S. Bartlett", but only with 16 jewels instead of 15.
So yes, I'd say this watch is a bit of a mystery....
Regards,
Barry
