Is there a tool designed to enlarge the opening in a crown so it can fit over a slightly larger pendant? I have seen crown tap sets, but I assume these are used to fit crowns to stems.
Regards,
Mike

Good morning Mike,
Yes! I can think of 3 types made, I've only seen the ones in the scan below in person.

They work moderatly well if you only have small amount to enlarge the crown. I've seen singles here and there but I believe they came in sets of 3.
Not a really rare tool. You should be able to find them at a watch show. This coming from somebody that hasn't been to a show in 10 years.

Another Crown Reamer (http://www.jigzaw.com/~lyle/CrownTool.jpg)
There were also turning gravers made specifically for enlarging crown recesses, and then, of course, you need the associated crown chuck kit for your lathe.
Dale made a nice series of rounded bottom pot collets for this. Levin made a set of brass collets just for turning crowns. There's a commonly found kit of 5 threaded caps.
Has anyone ever seen one of the real old, self centering chuck, collet mounted ones?
So, why haven't you been to a show in 10 years??

Lyle I had forgotten all about the lathe mounted type. You said there where special gravers just for crowns? I?ll need to look those up.

Why haven?t I been to a show in ten years? I never really liked the atmosphere and some of the attitudes. I may go to L.A. this year. I've got a couple of holes I'd like to fill in my collection.

OK, here's how much I like you wynter, that I searched for two hours to find this... knew I had it somewhere...
Crown Graver (http://www.jigzaw.com/~lyle/CrownGraver.gif)
So what else are you looking for???
My top items right now are a few Boley collets (anyone??), a balance scaffold, an escapement matching tool (like the many you own), a staking set faceplate...
K&D Faceplate (http://www.jigzaw.com/~lyle/Faceplate.gif)
As long as I'm rambling randomly... which I tend to do about this hour of the evening. Does anyone know where to get 'polishing sticks,' they look like drafting erasers, and are some sort of polishing compound in a rubber base in a plastic tube. Puts a beautiful shiny finish on pivots and staffs and such.
Thanx
