Hi All.

I'm basically a clock guy that got interested in carriage clocks a few years ago and I've accumulated a few (a lot). Their use of the platform escapements has gotten me interested in the pocket watch escapements which has gotten me interested in pocket watches and now that I look carefully at them I see that they're really exquisite. I used to skip the "Railroader's Corner" in the bulletin, but now I never miss it.

Anyway, can anyone out there suggest a book with basic information re. the pocket watches? I'm interested in the measurements used, the theories behind the designs, the different kinds of escapements, the damasceening techniques, etc.

Any info is appreciated. Many thanks.

Steve

Hi Steve:

One interesting book is "The Pocket Watch Handbook" M. Cutmore, Arco Publishing, New York, NY, 1985. Although probably out of print, it is available on loan by mail to members from the NAWCC Library & Research Center (http://www.nawcc.org/Library/library.htm). It isn't heavy on theory, but it does describe the development of escapements and other major design features.

fwiw,
the beginning of the Shugart Price guide contains some basic info... you don't need a current issue to get the info, a 'used' 2002 edition would suffice...
