While this question may seem elementary, could some one explain Walthams thinking.. A 16 size Vanguard with wind indicator has a scale of 0 to 24, which I assume is hours.. The mainspring will last approx 38 hours.. a similar Elgin product has a 0 - 40 scale which would closely match the mainspring run time in hours.. Would the scale on the Waltham be for a reminder to wind every 24 hours ? Not how much mainspring run is remaining .. How would one "set up" the indicator hand after a service. ?? Would the hand point zero at the end of the mainspring power or when it is time to rewind.....

John:

The scale actually is meant to show the number of hours since the watch has been wound. So, the hand should point to zero when the watch is fully wound.

The number of hours displayed is really meant to be meaningful. Since those watches bearing wind indicators (in other words, this doesn't apply to Bunn Special or Sangamo Special 60 hour watches) are meant to be wound every day, the scale doesn't need to extend past 24 hours (the hand will continue moving beyond 24 anyway).
