Here is another watch I didn't buy over the weekend. It was in a real nice 6 oz coin silver hunting case. I nearly bought it because I liked the case but the price was too high. Yeah, the whip spring is broken like on the 2 Rockfords I own.
The interesting thing is that it is not known to Henry Burgell's database. For that reason, I provide it as a data point. It looks like a model 2 Rockford (S/N 457698). It is key/stem wind and lever set.
Can anyone identify it further from the picture?
Thanks,
Stan

Stan,
According to R. Ehrdardt's "Serial Number-Grade Book", it's a model 3, made about 1889-90.

Is there a way to determine the jeweling on these older Rockfords? I didn't know enough to guess whether it was 11 or 15 jewels.
Thanks,
Stan
Judging by the fact that the jewels are in screw-in settings, I'd guess and that there is no top center jewel, that there are 15. However, you can pull the dial and count the ones in the pillar plate.
Information, especially a discussion of the different models, about Rockford's watches is available in Darrah G. Artzner's fine online article Review of the Rockford Watch Company And It’s Watches With Emphasis On Model Identification (http://www.nawcc-ch149.com/db_resch/Rockford%20Review.pdf).
