Two tones movements

I like very very much two tones movements, like this one here in the picture, but I have always wondered how did they make such things. The process should have been rather complicated, I think, and I do not think they were using photo-etching or such so how the magic was done ? I would really appreciate any remark, may be things are quite simpler than I suspect. Thanks for your help !

Hi,

Most of these were done by first gold plating a nickel bridge or other part and then damaskeening in the usual manner. The gold would be removed from the damaskeened areas thereby showing the nickel underneath.

At least that's my understanding.
