I have this little (0s) 1900 Waltham, 17j, ser.no.105832368. According to the Gray Book it should be a Maximus, but on top of it a very clear Riverside is engraved. I take it for a Riverside, or I am missing something ? Thanks for your help

Obviously your Riverside was part of a "mixed run" for which many of these watch companies were so famous. That run was of 17 and 19 jewel versions. Chances are some of the Maximus grade were 19 jewel versions. Being engraved Riverside makes it quite obviously not a Maximus.

This is not a very good picture, but it is the same watch in the Riverside Maximus grade. The Gray Book was not intended as a catalog but rather as a parts ordering device. If two grades had the same parts or if the parts folks thought they did, they rolled them together.

The earlier handwritten lists were more detailed. I presume we all know that the information is available on-line at http://nawcc-info.org.

Maximus grade almost always has a diamond endstone over the balance, even in teh small sizes. I can't tell whether the Graybear one does but Tom's picture shows it.

The Riverside grade was the "Consumer Reports Best Buy". For all usage it was identical to the "eye candy" grades. I am sure they claimed better adjustmentt but since they never stated what the standards were it's hard to see even that benefit.

Thanks to all, gentlemen !

I am rather novice at PW collecting, and your help is unvaluable to me : besides giving a large quantity of sound informations, your answers help me to get a perspective view, to put facts in order and link each bit of info in a live environment.

"First the book, then the watch" is the saying, but I personally think should be a little changed "First the book and the help of some friends who actually teach you on how to read it, then the watch"
