First off, let me make note of just how nice this site is. I was able to find all the information I needed in surprisingly short order... and the thrill of the hunt was infectious. I thoroughly enjoyed reading past posts with similar questions as mine... and interesting topics I am not capable of understanding quite yet.

So, as with others, I did inherit my grandfathers watch. It is as Elgin h3n11 class 50. I was told this was a replacement to the original watch in this case.

The bag the watch is in is marked Celebrity Inc, New York. Not sure if that is even relavent. But the case is something quite interesting. I had the watch to my local jeweler to learn how to set it correctly and he told me the case is the only one like it he'd ever seen. And the chain and fob attached to the watch had him spellbound.

The case has a flower pattern on 50% of both sides on a slant. The shield in the center of the one side is empty of script. The interior stamping reads : C. G. on a straight line with a line underneath it. Written on a curve below the line is the word WARRANTEED. Smack in the middle is the 14K stamp. Then on an opposite curve below that is U S ASSAY. This is all at the top. At the bottom on a curve is the serial number - 42893. The innards cover has the same serial number.

The chain is as any chain would look, but the fob has what look like 4 chandaliers hanging from ropes of gold. There is one at the top which has 2 ropes of gold decending to a diamond pattern then thru to two more of the chandaliers looking pieces. The 2 ropes go thru these and on to a larger chandalier at the very bottom. This is all attached to a red silk backing and all appears to be handsewn. It is approx. 5in. long excluding chain length and about an inch wide. Very intricate work for some skilled craftsmen.

I realize pictures are going to help 100%. I will take some and have them up as soon as I can.

By the way, I found an incredible webpage full of p/w's. I am not sure if this is legal to put in my post, its just for you to look at some real fancy watches.. I am in no way connected to them or anything. If you want to see it.. go to 3 w's then bogoff then add dot com to it. Click on pocket watches. Its got over 400 pics of some really nice nice items.

Feel free to PM if you have any information.
Thanks in advance - Brian Shaffer

Hi Brian:

Welcome to the NAWCC American Pocket Watch Message Board!

If it really a 6-size watch, it is more likely to be your grandfmother's watch than your grandfathers watch. What is the serial numbe on the movement?

We're looking forward to seeing the pictures. Please be sure to show one of the movement (the "works"), including the rim of the case.

To post an image, scroll to the top of the thread and click on "FAQ," then scroll down to "vBulletin FAQ" and click on the "How to post images" and follow the instructions. Note that there is no indication of attaching a file (picture) until you go to actually post your thread or your reply. The picture does not show up in the "Instant Reply" text box in which you've written your thread or your reply, nor does the picture appear in the "Preview"

Its also helpful if you can post all the markings that are on the movement in case they can't be seen in the picture(s).

Good luck,

Brian Shaffer

Thanks for the welcome Kent!

The serial # for this watch is 3299519. I find it pretty cool to find all the history behind the watch on the Elgin site. Even if it doesnt seem to have been updated since '02.

I am working on pics as we speak. Brian

Did you find the catalog listing for the 6-size grade No. 67 (http://elginwatches.org/scans/sales_catalogs/1887_S_F_Myers/m_elgin_watches.html)?

Kent - I had'nt seen that page.. very interesting. My guts look very similar to both of the scans on either side of the top page.

I figured out how to attach pics from comp. using edit features.

Thanks for your help! Brian

Quick question, this watch seems to be 1.5 seconds fast for every minute.
Is this an easy fix ? Something I could even do myself ?
Is there any direction you could point me in ?
Thanks again - Brian

Brian:

There are a number of reasons why your watch has this much of an error, none of which should attempted to be addressed by an inexperienced person, and a family heirloom is not something upon which to practice. Check out What You Need To Know About Watch Repair (http://elginwatches.org/help/watch_repair.html) at Wayne Schlitt's Elgin Website.

Also, check out Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.pocketwatchsite.com/faq.html) on the Pocket Watch Site.

Kent - thanks for the links. I am in no going to attempt to do anything with this watch from now on but open it and smile.

Interesting that this is a womens watch. I wonder which woman ? :)
