Found another nice South Bend the other day. After taking its picture, I can tell that this little 295 needs a cleaning but it is about as nice a movement as I ever find. Hopefully some of the South Bend experts will be able to tell me all about how it fits into the grade 295 production.

Bravo John.... on the find!!

Past references indicate the 295 was very high grade... and were the 'basis' for the Polaris model... very few mechanical differences 'if any'...

the Polaris was usually a "presentation" watch with its wooden box, marked dial, marked movement...

actually, many of these P dials are aftermarket

Misunderstanding. I was thinking about you to post them there because they want to build a database of south bend movements for the south bend database of southbendhorology.

What brings you to the idea that i will post your photos. I post my own!

Would you mind to post... is very different from would you mind if i post...

Beautiful watch! :) Do you have any links to more information about South Bend watches? I do not own any South Bends and would like to find out more about them. I would like to maybe purchase one in the future but know nothing about them right now.

Andre,

My misunderstanding Andre. I really do appreciate the fact that you asked. I am a photographer so the rights to my images mean a lot to me. You are a gentleman for asking.

By the way, I appreciate the link to the South Bend site. Thanks

John Cote: Understood. I am working in the printing idustry and know the deal.

Thats a fantastic watch you have. I found one very good last week too. So i am not that envious.

Did you get only the movement or did it came in an case?

I am very into South Bend because the very first "good" pocket watch i bought was a South Bend 341. I am from Germany and naturaly you look out for swiss ones. But there was a son of a collector who sold many american pocket watches here in Germany. And after that one i don't wanted anything else but american pocket watches. That was 4 years ago. So the swiss ones are gone and the american collection is growing...

This watch was listed on ebay just last week - auction ended early - bids cancelled - reason given: this watch is no longer available for sale.

FLEABAY listed, pulled, now shown here a week later--SOMETHING SMELLS!

Andre,

Along with being a photographer I too have been in the printing business. For a long time I worked for the big German company that makes gray printing presses.

The 295 is in a really beautiful Keystone gold filled case with no extra screw marks. It looks like this is an original watch.

Lyle,

This watch was listed on the for-sale site of a company with which I do business. Sometimes they list things on their site and on eBay at the same time, but I can't worry about that. I bought it directly from their site. This was not an eBay transaction. Anyone can go to their site (if they can find it) and see what I mean.

If, as Jon Hanson says, "Something Smells" about this transaction I don't know what it is....I just bought a watch...from a dealer.

Also, just for the record, if an eBay auction for this watch and any bids were canceled I have no knowledge of it.

Congrats on the nice find John and thanks for posting the photos!

Thanks also for letting us know that this one didn't come to you through the pulled eBay auction. There were actually two eBay listings put up and then cancelled for it, and the most recent was ended on December 12.

I've never been a fan of sellers simultaneously offering items on eBay and other venues but this does happen there. I just think this approach has the potential to confuse and frustrate people. And an example of this is right here. When this watch was listed I was considering a bid but was disappointed to see the auction pulled off within a few days, and when the same watch is posted here just a few days later the natural (but in this case incorrect) assumption was that it came through same source where we saw it.

And its a shame that its become very common on eBay for auctions to be cancelled due to individuals cutting out the legitimate bidders and getting sellers to end their listings outside the auction process. Someone (and many times several people) tries this with almost every watch of higher value on eBay and there is usually a rush in the early hours of the listing of folks looking to hijack the auction process and take items from sellers at a tiny fraction of their true value. These people like to target unknowledgable sellers and they like to try to get in early before the bidding reflects the real value. Some try to frame their offers within eBay rules, but many don't. I've never liked this "approach" to eBay and some of these people's tactics are really disgusting ... like the knowledgable buyer who a few years ago looked to take a $4K Ball watch by telling the seller he would give $150 so he could use it as "Parts to fix a customer's watch".

Thanks Fred. I am very happy with the watch too.

I don't feel like rehashing the morality of eBay. It has been discussed here ad-infinitum. I am a hard working collector. I operate under a moral code with which I am comfortable and with which I think my mentor/father would be quite comfortable. That is pretty much all I care about.

As I said, I am quite happy with the watch and also quite comfortable with how I got it and with the people who sold it to me.

Happiest of holidays to you and your Mom and Pop!
