View Full Version : Here's a stupid question on watch fobs

Been doing alot of looking at old posts regarding fobs & chains and have seen some really neat stuff. I've got several watch chains with different fobs, (mostly knives), and I also use a cheap heavy silver-tone chain for my daily carry watch. The whole chain concept is pretty easy to understand. Attach it to your belt or belt loop and the other end to the watch.

I know this may sound dumb, but can someone explain how the leather strap/fob combination is to be carried? I understand that the leather strap goes through the loop on the fob, but how is the watch attached, and how is this arrangement normally carried?

Maybe it's so overly obvious that I'm missing something. :?| Does anyone have a picture or example of this?

Thanks! Brett

Do you have one of the leather fobs in question you can upload a photo of? I've seen one where you loop the leather through the watch (creating a second loop) then back through itself.

strap hold watch at one end and the fob at the other; or, strap to watch and other to belt loop

Thanks, Jon. I understand that part. What's puzzling me is this. If I've got the strap looped around my belt, and the watch attached to the other end of the strap, and then the watch sitting down in the watch pocket of my jeans, where do you attach the fob? I would assume that a person would want it to hang freely where it can be shown off? Just curious as to how different people do this. Is there a proper way?

Thanks,
Brett

you either want a fob to dangle out your pocket or a strap for safety

I think that the situation that you are talking about is when a vest was worn. In one pocket, the watch would reside, and in the opposite pocket of the vest a small pen-knife or some- such attachment would be carried; the fob would be displayed, on the outside, in the middle of the vest.

Brett,
Here are a few photos of how I attach the fob & watch to the leather strap. I hope this helps.

The type of fog shown in the last photos were attached to the watch and just hung out of the pocket. It made it easier to remove the watch from the pocket. It did not provide any security for the watch in case it was dropped. It was not attached to your clothing.

Other chains had T's that were fit into a button hole of the vest. Others had a hook that louped around the button. Both of these protected the watch from dropping and gave some security against theft from pick pockets.

Some chains contain spring rings. These were often attached to items like knives that were placed in the opposite vest pocket. Sometimes the chain was also pass through a botton hole for extra security, sometimes not, relying on the knife acting as an achor in the other pocket.

Finally, some chains contain a large spring ring. These could be attached to a belt loupe when vests went out of style.

I used to carry an inexpensive quartz pocket watch on a fob just like that when I worked at a local hardward store. In the past, many times folks didn't HAVE a watch pocket on their trousers, nor did they wear a vest. The practice was to push a watch down inside your waist band on your 'strong hand' side. The fob and strap came out the top of your trouser line, and was then tucked under the belt securing the watch in place, and the fob itself on display where it hung under the belt. (If you watch John Wayne films, or even Quigley Down under, you'll see them do this with their watches). The only way to lose your watch was if your belt broke, or you forgot to grab the watch before removing your trousers.

I wore my watch this way for couple of years every day, running back and forth, moving freight, etc. and NEVER had the watch jar loose, and it was as protected in it's location as in a pocket...probably more so. I have done this since with open face mechanical watches too, and no problems.

Just a suggestion, but it works fine for me.

Regards! Mark

Thanks, PW! That's what I was looking for. I guess that you either want to show off the fob or keep the watch safe, but you can't have both, huh?

I guess at work or with my daily carry watch I'll continue to keep it on a chain and stashed in my watch pocket for safety. If I'm out and carrying a better watch and I'm not so concerned about daily work abuse, I can always use the strap/fob combo and show off a little.

Thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions! This helps to clarify things a little better.

Brett:

I used to carry a watch using a leather strap and fob until it dropped one time (necessitating a new staff). Now I use a chain secured to my belt.

Wes....thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. Why can't I ever find these sites when I do a search? Must be typing in the wrong key words or something.

Thanks again to all of you for your help!
