how do you tell the difference of a minuete 5min or quarter hour repeaters apart, meaning if you bought a scrap repeater how do you tell which one it is?

If the watch is not working, you need to look under the dial at the repeating works. The minute repeater will have a minute rack with 16 teeth plus the quarter rack. The 5 minute will have a single 12 tooth rack. The half quarter is difficult to tell from the quarter by looking. It has a stop piece that comes into play at the 7 1/2 minute mark but otherwise looks like a quarter repeater. You probably will not see one of those anyway.
There is also a 1/3 quarter repeater that is rather rare. It strikes quarters ting tang and then 1 or 2 blows on the high note to indicate 5 or 10 minutes past the quarter. Functionally it is a 5 minute repeater, but much cooler.
I forgot to mention that they all have a 13 tooth hour rack to strike the hours.

do not suggest to a non watch man to remove a dial and risk dial damage or hand loss

He already said it was scrap. Now if we can just persuade him to use the attachments instead of those huge pictures. :o

First, there are pieces from at least two differentrepeater mvt's on your pictures. Secondly, the partly assembled mvt shown seems to be a quarter repeater. By far the most common type.

Click on the paperclip icon above your editing area when making a post and follow the directions. You can copy pictures either from your computer or from your picture hosting site.
There is a lot of discussion about this in the Practicing and Learning Forum.
