I got this watch in a small collection a couple weeks ago. Could not get past looking at the case to see what was inside. Figured it was an 1883 because it was an 18s Waltham  , finally looked it up and it says 1877. Looked in CS guide and there are no 1877 SW's listed. Searched the green board and found lots of discussion trying to nail down the 1877 vs 1879 question. (this is where I found "Friction Hand Setting ") http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i4/crsides/franksherwin028.jpg
I now know (I think) what a pointy plate is. #2443776. Stem wind, lever set. Mvt is in really nice condition as is the case.
I will try to post some pics. Any info will be appreciated.

Charlie, I might be wrong, but to my knowledge, the model 79 was a stemwind with a male stem. The 79 was configured to be OF, with the 4th wheel pivot 180 degrees from the stem, where the model 77 stemwind is the HC configuration.

In the Waltham database, the model identification comes from the notoriously unreliable "gray book." The 1877 vs 1879 is especially subject to revision as examples are found.
It is my impression that, if the watch is an open face stem winder, it is really an 1879 model. If it is HC or KW it is an 1877 model (all other things being equal).

I think you're right, Tom. I have a parts watch that has a male stem, and it's an 1879 open face. I have many k/w, and male stem wind, hunter case movements that are 1877 models.
