I am not a collector of many years but I do love finding and repairing classic timepieces. I consider myself one who Preserves rather than collects. I recently had an old united states watch co. pocket watch repaired and it is a beauty. On the movement it clearly reads "new york, usa" and not the Marion NJ as I have read about. It clearly reads united states watch co. usa on the movement and united states watch co usa on the double sunk dial. This is a 16s SW LS OF 15j no. 805951 hc movement, If wondering. Nice swing out case but not the original. I can't find much about the "new york" or why it is even on there. To avoid any confusion this is not a new york standard. I just don't know where to look anymore, not much information on this early watch.
I would be ever so thankful if another watch enthusiast could share their wisdom with me.
I thank you kindly for any replies.

Kind regards,
richard

Hi R love and welcome. Your watch is made by N.Y Standard watch company. They had many styles of watches. Not very well made, as more difficult to repair. But if you like it, that is all that matters. I have a 12 sz and a 18 sz and they are just part of my collection. Can you post a photo of your watch?:)

I'm thinking something different than what my friend Kevin posted.

I believe your watch was made by the United States Watch Company ... but there were two firms that used a similar name at different timeframes and yours is definitely not a product of the Marion, NJ firm of the late 1860's and early 1870's. The "other" and unrelated US Watch Co. was established around 1885 in Waltham, Massachusetts and I believe produced until around the turn of the century. This is what I believe you have.

Most of the US Watch Co. of Waltham watches were marked with the Waltham location but some of the ones I've seen at high serial numbers (around the 800,000 range like your watch) are marked "New York" instead. Unfortunately I can't help much more than this though as I don't know much about this company's history after the early years ... so I don't know the reason for the New York marking on some of the later products, but can say that the NY marking on these is something I've seen before more than a few times.

On this board we can't talk about ongoing eBay auctions, but we can reference completed eBay items for educational discussion. Here are links to photos of two lady's size US Watch Co. watches, the first here is at serial number 780011 and is marked "New York" as the location ...

While the second here clearly has the same plate design but is at serial number 747266 and is marked "Waltham" as the location ...

Hopefully this is a good start, sorry that I couldn't be more helpful with the signficance of the New York marking but hopefully one of our collectors more familliar with US Watch Co. of Waltham history can add some info on why some of these late ones were marked New York.

Hi Fred it was more of a guess as i would need to see a picture. I would not be a 100 percent positive to id a watch unless seen, i was perhaps to hasty in my answer.Perhaps the watch will be posted to see.
