This arrived today, 6s Model 1 7J lever set Trenton hunter. Inscription puts it in the middle of the date range at 1895.. Runs ok, but will need a little TLC to make it really nice.. The case is simply marked "Essex Columbia" with no other indications. Should I assume gold filled? Also the back cover (not the dust cover) doesn't quite stay put when shut, its snaps into place, but then pops out a very slight bit. Any ideas on a fix?

Your Essex case is gold filled. I noted from your pix that there are extra screw marks in your case. This suggests that the case is not original to your watch and had previously held another movement. Your watch could easily date to 1895, or a couple years earlier, from the SN, but due to the case switch, you should ignore the presentation date for dating your watch.

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure on the case composition, but its no surprise there, I suppose.. far as it being switched, I had thought it might have been, but its good to get confirmation.
Still, its a pretty little thing, so I think its going off to the spa for the full treatment..

Harold,
According to Roy Ehrhardt's book, "TRADEMARKS", your case was made by the "COURVOISIER-WILCOX MFG. CO". located at 21-23 Maiden Lane, New York.

And, taken over by Courvoisier-Wilcox:
