A variant 946 pattern showed up at our local chapter meeting yesterday.

I recall seeing this pattern on a 940 variation, but not on the 23j.

Can someone post a pic of the similar 940 pattern ?

Would love to see other variations used on the 23j 946.

The pic with two mvts shows the variant along with the std 946 pattern (right)

thanks

Charlie,
Here is an example of the same damaskeen pattern on a Grade 940.
What is the S/N on the Grade 946?

Its 439509.
I've posted a pic in diffused light that show the markings more clearly.

Terry said you had posted this same pattern in a 940, but we could not find it. Thanks for posting again. And thanks for naming the pattern. Sunburst. (I like it).

Both are in gold trim. Are there any unusual markings on your movement? Mine are std for the time period.

Ed, do you and Kent have any 940 or 946's recorded close to these number that would indicate how many might have been produced?

HI Rhett....

Yes, I did see the 'other' variant you posted on your site... so much different and soooo nice..

Is there a relationship to pattern vs customer?

Also note on Charlie's example the postion of the Adjusted 5 Positions marking...

Ed... I do remember that one also... this was the estate example?

I did a quick review of our database and did not come up with any other "sunburst" Grade 946.
There were several with the "sunburst" in Grade 940:
512,515
515,631
527,733 (This is mine, came from the Mike Laux collection, the SN on the scan is wrong)
527,737
554,418
524,913
591,713 (Private label for Fred Straub)
693,412
There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern in the serial numbers here.

Terry,

Although a few of the "sunburst" patterns may have been sold through others, the bulk were sold through Luckenbach in Los Angeles. This includes a number of watches which were private labelled for Fred Straub.

In regards to the pattern I pictured, these were sold primarily through Burr Freer of San Francisco.

thanks Rhett, Terry and Ed for the information. And special thanks for the images of the sunburst 940 and the radial line 946. Two nice Hamiltons there. It is greatly appreciated.

I got the ledger page from Don which shows 439501-439510 were 946's ordered by Luckenback. No notation on spl damaskeen. Rhett, could you assume there were 10 sunburst pattern 946's produced, based on these entries?

there were a few Freer 946 entries on the same page. 439554 & 439582

Charlie,

I would think it very probable that the entire lot of 10 (439501-439510) has the same pattern as yours. Whether or not any other lots exists is still a question. Based on the lack of additional sightings, it seems somewhat unlikely that many other lots exist.

Charlie,

I find something else about your sunburst 946 interesting (I'm not sure anyone else will).

The movement screws are not only gold flashed, but they appear to be the higher grade screws with flat chamfered heads usually found on the 942 grade. Rhett's watch and just about every other 946 I have ever seen has the more common domed head screws.

Interesting? Who knows?

Ed's 940 sunburst has gold trim, and perhaps Hamilton used the same screws (gold and shape) on this 946 as the other Sunburst watches. Could be specified by Luchenbach or just what they had on hand in gold.
