Can anyone tell me by looking at the movement only if this had a wind indicater on it ?

You can tell if an 18-size, model 8 (Veritas model) has (or has had) a winding indicator by looking at the movement. This one, serial number 9606897 did not have one.

The main feature to look for on the back is the Winding Indicator Gear (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y284/walt845/18S_23J_Veritas_WI_M_Ed_Ueberall.jpg). Even if it is missing, the circular milled out portion of the barrel bridge and the hole will remain to indicate it was once there.
