hello,

being new to wacth collecting, i have been looking on ebay at wacthes. i found a vintage Waltham 15-jewel pocketwatch, size 12.

seller gives the following info...

"The case is made by Elgin, and has the serial # 5356145; the movement is by Waltham, and has the serial # 18193976. The watch needs a bit of a shake to get started, but once it's moving it runs fine and keeps perfect time. "

my questoin is well, i never heard of shaking your wacth to get it ti go. so im thinkiking that this wacth workes but is not in good working order. what could be the cause of having to shake it? i am thinking there is somthing bend, broke or other wise not right. but i could be wrong. am i wrong? if i am not wrong and thinking right what could be some possable problem with this wacth and what wold be the fix? hope my questoin makes sence.
thanks for your time

What the seller means by 'shaking' is probably a brief,
rapid rotation that initiates movement of the balance
wheel. This may be nothing more than a sign that the
watch needs cleaning.

If you were planning to carry this watch (wind it regularly)
cleaning would be a recommended first step regardless.
It it's to go into a collection, there's likely no need, unless
there are other concerns.

Another reason the watch may need to be shook to get it started is that it is out of beat. The hairspring may need to be shifted one way or the other so the the roller jewel correctly aligns with the pallet fork.
