View Full Version : Making German Clock Hands

The other day, while adjusting a Junghans mantle movement, the hand jammed while I was moving it, and I applied too much pressure and broke it from the round piece that holds the bushing.

I realize that it can be soldered, but I would like to make a new hand from steel. I realize that the slightly convex shape will be tough. Although these hands are of simple design, they are hard to find on Ebay as parts.

Enclosed is the broken off hand alongside one from another of my Junghans clocks.

How would I make this hand? What steel stock should I use? How to you create and install the brass bushing with the square hole for the minute hand arbor?

Can anyone walk me through this? I appreciate it!

I thought most material dealers would have such hands - M & P certainly do. The brass bush - as you still have it, you can turn it down slightly if needed and then just stake it as the original was.

If you really wanted to make one, a bit of mainspring, annealed, would to it, but you'd have to make a grooved concave stake to curve it. A bit of a faff, though!

Hi Thumz, have a small machine shop. (hobby size) I have sheets of mild steel from which I have made hands. Glad to cut you what you need. Can send you a blank strip or reem a bushing hole on one end. If you would like to call I'd be glad to help any way I can.

The closest hands I found from M&P were these Napoleon hands. They don't look bad. I would need to get the appropriate bushing. I assume the bushing it installed by opening up the hole in the hand and press fitting the bushing and then peening it in the back?

Thanks,
Thumbz
