I have begun to disassemble an 18s key wind Elgin GM Wheeler. It will require a bit of work, but I prefer to fully disassemble the piece and clean it to determine exactly what work needs to be done. However, I can't see how the mainspring can be let down.

1. By actuating the pallet fork I can tell there is still some power to the train. But I can't see how the spring is safely let down.

2. There are no visible dial screws, just a locating pin at the 11:00 position and the dust band is still in place so I can't determine how the dial is released either. I'm reluctant to just try lifting the dial in case it is secured in some way

If you are familiar with this Elgin movement, I will certainly appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,
Remove the dust ring then you will see that the dial is held on with taper pins. As for the mainspring there should be a small hole on the edge of the pillar plate somewhere near where the mainspring barrel is located. Hold the barrel arbor with a bench key and insert a pin or small screw driver blade in the hole to release the click.

Fantastic!!! I have serviced many clocks with a pinned dial, but this is the first watch. Spring has been let down and dial removed... Thank You LarFure!!!
