another am watch, any information appreciated

while clearing a deceased relatives house i came across a silver pocket watch, it is hallmarked but it is difficult to make out some of the markings, it appears to be stamped with a lion, an anchor, a crucifix shape cross, has the letters AB and the number 53833 (possibly 51811). Stamped on the back of the mechanism are the words; am watch co., waltham mass and the number2171962. any information would be greatly appreciated

The watch is a 10 size, 7 jewel 1878 model Waltham for the English market.

The case with the A.B mark is for Alfred(?) Bedford who was the agent for Waltham. The case was probably made by Dennison who did not have a mark registered at the time.

The watch was made in December 1883. There should be a date letter, and the possible T that you described as a cross does not really fit for the time frame. The nearest T for the Birmingham marks is 1893, the I from 1885 is a possible match, but we we would need to see the mark to recognize it.

The date letter is a lower case I. It is lying on its side.

The rest of the data all fits, the mark is for 1885.

thank you very much tom. i only found the watch yesterday and already you have given me more info than i could have imagined.
unfortunately i dont have a winder so i am going to have to find a local jeweller who can tell me if it is in working order and get estimates for service or repair.
