Could one the early Waltham experts tell me what the first run serial number range for the Mdl 72 would have been. I have # 670287.. How early in production would that have been ??

Hi John -

There is a very nice article on 72 model Walthams by Philip J. Guest in the October 1996 bulletin.

This article shows the earliest run of 72 model as being Amn. Watch Co. grade at serial number 600001-600500.

The second run is listed at serials 625001-626000 as Park Road, and then the next run is listed at serials 670001-671000 with the first 100 being 18 jewel American Watch Co. grade and the last 900 being 16 jewel nickel Am'n Watch Co. grade. The earlier two runs are listed as gilt, so this 671K range is the first listed as nickel 72 model production.

I don't know if further research has adjusted these figures any, but this is what the article shows.

I think those numbers are pretty accurate. Here is a watch from the first run of 1872 American Grade. It is sn 670,012.

Thank you very much, Fred and Tom.. The movement is 16 Jewel Gilt.. fits nicely into the ranges listed..

Fred, this watch would seem to contradict the article. It is #670,629 which is 16J gilt and not nickel. Paul

On the subject of new finds in '72 model mvts, did any of you Waltham collectors see the NICKEL Park Road mvt that passed through ebay recently? I couldn't find any mention of such in the various sources that were at my disposal, only the gilt variety.

I saw it Greg and tried to buy it, but my budget is a bit low right now.

It was the first nickel Park Road 72 I had seen.

I did not think there would be much competition but you and John Wilson both thought it was worth more than I did.

While the pictures are still up it is at 72 Park Road (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330198444167).

If you would like to see the source material for the serial number information you can click on the thumbnail below. :)

These are .png format files to get the file size to a reasonable value and still be legible. It is a pretty accurate image of the source material used for the database project.

101. only, Tom????

Yes, I was kind of kicking myself afterward. :( However JW and I seem to bump heads on this sort of thing fairly often and I live in the hope that he will clean it up and resell it for the labor content. :)

Actually, my decision not to compete was based on the fact that after seeing the watch, I knew everything I needed to know about it.

OK, so now on to the dial.. Would this be considered the "standard" dial for this movement..
