What's the Father Time that seems to have a less popular standing-Cooksey's says it's "up jeweled" from 17 to 21 jewels-is there a model number to identify this poor pocket?? Thanks.

Marty:

For a better understanding of Elgin's Father Time grade, take a look at: "Railroaders' Corner - The Watch That Gets Forgotten: Elgin's Father Time," NAWCC Bulletin, No. 348, February 2004, pp. 63-72. (Available to members on loan by mail from the NAWCC Library & Research Center (http://www.nawcc.org/Library/library.htm).).

I didn't have the grade numbers available when I first answered. Here's an applicable part from the above mention article:

Without knowing the serial number, I can only guess, but around 1896, some 17-jewel, hunting-case movements, grade No. 164, were upjeweled to 21-jewel, signed "Father Time" and assigned grade No. 995. Similarly, some 17-jewel, open-face, grade No. 166 movements were upjeweled to 21-jewel, signed "Father Time" and assigned grade No. 266.
