Norbert,
I recall a short write-up about Phil. in the NAWCC Bulletin wherein a group of invoices were described that indicated the origin of Phil. mvts, but I don't have the reference at had. I also seem to recall that the write-up was by either Larry or Jerry Treiman. I'm sure that Jerry will respond with all the details.

The article that Greg refers to was written by my brother, Larry, in 1978. In the short Bulletin article he presents the facts of a small group of customs papers that document the shipment of watch movements, tools and materials to E.Paulus in Philadelphia from the firm of Alexandre Bonsack of Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. There was no indication who the actual manufacturer may have been. The papers are dated from March 1874. I don't have any information on watch movements from 1870. However, the 1874 invoices covered movements with serial number in the one-thousands, two-thousands, five-thousands, six-thousands and ten-thousands, so it sounds like Paulus' watches may not have begun too much earlier.
