It is a Jones cal. 9 with a little bit more quality.
It is from 1873-75....
5 chaton's with screws, 3 without screws (under dial)

max size 43,8 mm, i search also a case for it, it can be coin silver, 14k or 18k it can be 16S.

This brings up an interesting question regarding terminology. Are all jewel settings "chatons" or only those with a raised outer rim?

If one just means "jewels in settings" then 8 does not seem like a particularly large number. Most 17 jewel American watches have 12 jewels in settings counting the pallet and balance (and ignoring cap jewels).

I tried to get babelfish to tell me what the word chaton translates to in English and it responded kitten (chat = cat I already knew).

Chaton = Cat :D nooo... Châton -> Château -> Castle "i think"


Chaton is french/swiss, it means the metallring (gold or Brass) which fixed the jewel. There are 2 variations, with screw and pressed one.

It can be only 2 chaton's on one staff (up top and Below [under dial])

In swiss and in germany a chaton is for fine-regulation f.e. IWC and A. Lange und Söhne, Assmann.
Chatons in USA are often only for style and jewellery and has no function.

Jones movements was produced in switzerland and not in USA, the is a technical wonder at 1875 ! Tom i want your qual. E und H :D
