Recently I had an opportunity to inspect a purse/pendant watch by Gruen , model 610 (Carre), 17 jewels, SN: E2144 (see pictures), and would like to learn more about it. The movement of this watch is Swiss, but the case is American (Wadworth, pat. applied 315,107). When this watch was made? Thanks in advance.

Dear Jerzy,
at the end of the roaring 1920s depends to this shape of design. In Europe the time period with unique design (furniture, houses, architect-style) was also called "Bauhaus-Style", similar to the Art-Deco time (mid to end 1920s) after.
A Carré in an aluminum case with a man's pocket watch chain attached, shown both open and closed. Aluminum would have been considered an exotic metal for a watch case, much as titanium is now.

Please have a look to this wonderful site from Paul Schliesser about the GRUEN Watch Company:

Hope it helps you a little bit.
Yours sincerely

The Gruen Carré watches were produced from 1931 till 1934, in two different sizes and in a variety of case metals and finishes. This is a supplement from the 1931 dealers book showing what I believe to be your watch in the lower right corner.

These are nice, unusual and collectable watches, similar in market value to the Movado Ermeto series. Your version is apparently the most common, or at least the one to have survived intact most often. I have one almost identical. The precious metal ones, and the enamel inlaid models command very high prices.

Many thanks for your very informative note on the Gruen Carre watches. It nicely complements the previous note by Nachtmotte. I acknowledged the latter before by a direct e-mail.
