Does anyone know of a reference source, or database, for checking the serial numbers of Tremont pocket watches?

I bought a Tremont Watch Co. pocket watch, with a coin silver hunter case, on ebay on May 19, 2006. The seller said that it did not run, however, his otherwise sharp photo showed the balance wheel in a blur of motion, which built up my hopes that it only needed to be wound with a key, which the seller did not have. When I got it, sure enough, it ran like the day it was made!

The coin silver hunter case was in bad condition, with dents, scratches, loose hinges, and needing a front lid spring. I sent this Tremont to Wes Boger, and on Wes's recommedation, had Wes send the hunter case to Wuischpard & Son, specialists in silversmithing - including making and repairing pocket watch cases. About four months later, I received this Tremont back.

Here are two links to view photos of this Tremont; the first link shows "Before" and "After" photos that are edited with text explanations, and the second link includes only photos of the reconditioned Tremont.

My personal thanks goes out to both Wes Boger, and Peter Wuischpard, for their fine repair work and old world-style craftsmanship. Wes Boger cleaned, oiled, regulated the time, and replaced the crystal of my Tremont. Wes also handled the shipping out of the Tremont case to Wuischpard & Son. Peter Wuischpard repaired, restored, and reconditioned the coin silver hunter case back to its original condition.

Back to my original question - is there any way to determine the exact year of manufacture of my Tremont Serial Number 4974? The Tremont Watch Co. of Boston was in business during 1864, 1865, and 1866, according to the references that I have checked (the 2006, Complete Price Guide to Watches).

Thank you,
Jerry

As it is, you know that the watch was made in 1865, plus or minus one year. That is about as close as anybody comes to really knowing when their watch was made.

By the way, there is a logo inside the front case cover. The case serial number style and "Warranted coin" seem similar to early Fortenbach/Fahys case markings. What is the complete logo and wording inside the case cover??

Mike,

The inside of the front case lid has, "Fahys - Monarch - Coin - M7362"

You can see a photo of the inside of the front case lid by clicking onto Link #2 above, then scrolling down to photo #11 in the left column, and then clicking onto the thumbnail of #11.

Jerry.......great job on thumb nails. Really like the second link. Nice work on case restoration.

Wes Boger does excellent work on movements and thanks for the reference on a silver smith (I have a couple of cases they could help with).

I have a couple of watches ready to go to Wes so I should send them before you send more watches (just kiddin).

Nice snag on the Tremont.

It was a pleasure to work on this Tremont. I could tell when working on it that it was a quality movement. Dare I say, more so than the "common" Waltham 57 models in its day.
Iwas very impressed with the work Peter from Wuischpard and Sons perfomred on the case. Peter is an amazing craftsman and I highly recommend the company.
