I've just bought an Illinois 18s OF partial pocket watch movement for spares ( needed a 4th wheel & pinion ). Movement was marked "Washington Watch Co." .... "Liberty Bell". It appeared to have a broken balance staff, but on closer inspection I found the staff, roller table, jewel, hairspring were all OK and perfectly serviceable.

Trouble was the staff was too short for the movement and the balance cock # (9110) didn't match any sequence in the serial # on the back plate (2691276). I've since measured the staff length at 0.226 which I believe makes it a # 47632. Fine, but I can't find any reference to the type of movement that such a staff would fit ? Can anyone enlighten me please ?

All I found was that it fits a OF 18s Model 6 with a small collet. Hope that is of some use.

Where did you get the #47632 from? The number I had for the .226 length staff was #6890-1281. I guess Illinois made a new series of numbers for parts that I don't possess.

Hi Tim

Thanks for getting back to me. The info I got was from an advert on Ebay for 18s Illinois staffs. This is a current ad and the advertiser sets out all the info on the staffs he is selling including lengths. However, he doesn't say which models these fit ??

The old E&J Swigart catalogue I have, although an invaluable reference doesn't list the 47632, only the 47601 through 47605.

If you want to check out the Ebay ad it is current.

Thanks Hudd. I'll check Ebay.

Was the info above useful? The only other Model 6 staff was .232 in length, #6889-599 and I guess "regular or large" collet.

I found that the #47632 is a staff with a large collet,pivot 11-12, for a model4 & 6 hunter movement.

Don and Leghorn

Thanks for the detailed information. It will take me a little while to digest but I'm certain the answer is in there. Again, many thanks.

Hi Tim

Yes indeed. By the way the collet is large size and I've checked the overall length again. It is 0.226" give or take 1/2 Thou. I think the reason for my confusion is in part to changes in reference #'s by manufacturers. Anyway, a useful spare to have and a bonus for me as I bought the movement thinking the staff was broken.
