Stone Mountain size 4 Crystal Plates (# 4 case or modified #6 cased in the Factory ???)

Question regarding specifically size #4: Did Waltham produce size #4 cases for the crystal plate or was a size 6 modified for this odd size. I realize these were never made with the intend to mass produce and they along with the size 17 (model 72 design ) was made by the jewelling department, by and in the Waltham factory, only to see if was do-able and or practicable. I believe some ?? 17 sizes were and possibly some size 4’s were cased at the factory and sent to jewelers as Waltham’s advertising campaign.
Seeing less than 60 movements may have been produced, tooling for a size 4 case and crystal plate watches were not a high priority list for Company profit.

Maybe I should re phrase this question. Has anyone seen a #4 crystal plate cased in an original AWC case. I have seen two and both were modified #6 cases including one sold at Sotheby’s for $58,000. Both cases had trace evidence of the setting lever.

Ron,

I have not made notes on the 4 size crystal plates I have seen. I recall thinking that the cases were original on a couple of them including one display back.

Waltham did make/have made cases for the 00 size, which was not an experiment, but certainly was low production with a maximum of no more than 1800 of that size. I don't know of any other companies that made 00 size watches either.

Hi Tom

The #4 Crystal plate sold at Sotheby’s Time Auction October 13-15 2004 Lot#1019 had an interesting case. When I examined it there appeared to be a filler ring attached by two visible retaining screws. ( not ones that wuld hold the hindge spring)On the dial side you could see the area where a lever would be for the six size movement .You were not permitted to remove the glass back or remove the movement so one could not verify the existence of a filler ring. The only other #4 I have seen has a similar case setup without any visable screws. The case did appear to be a size six. I would have attached a pic but the pis’c are copy protected. One can go to Sotheby’s site and view the #4 in October 13-15 2004 Lot#1019 auction.

Yes even the Mudge was remove from the case (by a Sothebys personnel - white gloves were handed out and under a watchful eye ) but they would not allow me to disassemble that crystal plate at the time I requested.
