In 1890 the Columbus Watch Co. began discontinuing its standard numbered watches and began introducing its named grades (see e.g. Kent Singer (http://www.pocketwatch.org/Railroad/Railroad.htm)).

If any readers of this board have had the opportunity to “stare and compare” I hope you’ll explain:

In what ways (apart from name) do Columbus named grades – Columbus Kings, North Stars, Railway Kings, etc. – differ from their similarly-jeweled numbered relatives?

Thank you very much!

The quality of the engraving and jewel count. As Columbus went to Name Grades their high end watches had more and more Jewels.
North Star-- 7, 11, 15 jewel versions with or without double sunk dials Adj and unadjusted, nickel and gilt. I have not seen any 16 or 17 jewel units.
