CASE MARK ??

Has anyone ever seen this case mark before..

The book “History of the American Watch Case,” Warren H. Niebling, Whitmore Publishing, Philadelphia, PA, 1971 (available on loan by mail to members from the NAWCC Library & Research Center (http://www.nawcc.org/Library/library.htm)), shows three acorns used in a trade mark registered by the Metropolitan Watch Case Co. (NY) in 1890 (No. 18644). Page 92 shows their use in conjunction with a horseshoe and a three-leaf clover, but the horseshoe has its own trade mark registration by the company.

However, the text of the application states that "... the essential feature of which is the representation of the three acorns surmounting a horseshoe.

It will be very hard to find out who made that case mark. It looks like a triangle in the middle of the numbers. More than 30 years ago the AWI (what it was called then) issued members case marks. It was supposed to help law enforcement in tracking the identity of victims. Mine had a triangle in it. I have not been a member for a long time so I don't know if they still use this system any longer or not. You might want to check with them.

Between the 2 patends, recorded 3 months apart, it appears that they could use any combination of acorns or horseshoes...
