Dollar Watches?

Now that the floor has been opened about dollar watches I thought I would show everyone a picture of two brand new dollar watches, still in the original containers. These were bought by a collector friend of mine over twenty + years ago. The plastic container they are in can be opened like a book and we have wound them and they keep accurate time.

Wow, cool watches. What year approximately do they date to? Has to be after 1963 because there is a zip code printed on the label.

The best dates we can give you about the purchase date of the watches is between 20 and 25 years ago.

When I was a boy, back in the MidWest in the 40's and 50's, Dollar Watches were the only timepiece the farmers would carry in their bib overalls. They carried these watches until they stopped running and then they would squirt a little kerosene into the "works" and the watch would run a few more years.

I was thinking that I know of no other watch that has the name recognition as the "Dollar Watches" have. Wow ! what history that is attached to these watches. Anyone with a few years behind knows about the dollar watch. I know that many brands of watches fall under the heading of dollar watches, but the brand is not what made this watch famous. It was the price. My Dad always carried his dollar watch in the watch pocket of his bibed overalls. When they gave out he put them in a cigar box and bought another one. That's how I became interested in pocket watches. I was always working on the old watches he discarded and tried to get them running again.
Is their other names out there that people will know what you are taking about if you say the name ? Would Railroad watch be one ?

Bob, We've seen pix of the Westclox and Ingersoll. Other companies that are out there and frequently seen are (1) Ingraham, which ceased production around 1968; (2) New Haven Clock Company, which ceased production in the mid 1950's, and (3) Ansonia Clock Company, which ceased production in 1930. There were some other companies that had short lives before the turn of the century, ie Waterbury Watch Co, Bannatyne Watch Co. There are several others that I can not think of right now. Others will be sure to chime in.
