Good Morning:

I am just about finished reassembling a 18S Elgin, it's a long story, but almost finished?
The good news is that the watch is running. My problem is with the lever set. The watch is a grade 96, class 6 serial # 3447316. The lever correctly moves into position when the lever is pulled out, but the plate has to be moved manually to disengage the pinions from the centre wheel. Looking at the watch I think there is a spring missing that pushes the plate back into the unset position when the lever is pushed in, but I can't say for sure. There are 2 springs in the lever already. One flat spring held in by a screw in the channel under the lever arm and lever plate, and one wire spring on top of that. There is another "hole" parallel to the arm on the lever plate that looks like the place that a missing spring may go. It does not appear to be a screw down spring, but a pressure fit. I have looked in my Fried book and cannot find a diagram that would help to explain this configuration. Does anyone know where I could find a drawing that would help me determine if I am indeed missing a spring?

Thank you!
Grant Perry

I just cleaned one of those for a friend, and always take detailed photos for reference. I will dig it up and post it here for you within the hour...

Grant,

Do you have the Illustrated Manual of American Watch Movements by Swigart? If not, let me know the model and I'll scan a page and email it to you. I can't say there are great diagrams of assembled watches, but there's a drawing of each individual part.

Regards,
Mike

Sorry - I was rather busy with phone calls this morning and missed reading that yours was a model 96 (mine was an 1883)

I removed the two posts above (as they did not apply to your problem)

---

If the "hole" you mentioned is a slot at the edge of the plate it is likely that you want to position the second spring that you mentioned to sit into the slot. I have other watches like that...

Thanks guys for your help. I received an e-mail from Keith with a diagram that was exactly what I needed. I can't host the pictures, but GandalfPC, I will send you the file to see how it was different. My problem was just the positioning of spring C.
Thanks again guys. Your assistance was much appreciated. It is working fine!
