Howdy folks. I am restoring a very old Black Forest cuckoo clock. It is 23 inches by 17. The movement dimensions are 6 1/4 W by 4 1/4 H. The back plate has initials GK. On the wooden ring behind the hands are imprinted Koehl Clock Co. It is known as a "Quail" because in addition to the cuckoo coming out of its door, the quail also comes out of a separate doorand the clock strikes on the quarter hour.
My question is this: The clock has a thirty hour movement and three weights which are a whopping 2 3/4 lbs each. As a result, all of the click gears are badly worn. Is this normal? Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. My email is robertsclocks31@cs.com, tel 909-338-9406 Bob

Bob,

I have several of these clocks and they all have 2 3/4 lb. weights. The clicks on most all of these old cast movement cuckoos seem to wear quite a bit. I don't think it's caused be the amount of weight used as much as it is the nature of the cast brass. Wrought or rolled brass won't show as much wear especially in an application where it receives a beating as the click wheel takes.

Hope this helps,

:wink:Anser Thanks a lot for your input on the cuckoo weights. It is, in fact, a cast movement, and some of the gears look like casts. I have another question that you'll probably be able to answer. When I received the clock, the back was missing, and the gong or gongs. Since there are two strike hammers, should there be also two gongs? I have seen a double gong on some Gustav Becker wall clocks but nevers (so far) on a cuckoo clock.
If you could answer that one me I would be indebted to you forever. Thanks Bob
