Becky,
You almost answered your question. "It doesn't say Gold". In the years before the The Metal Stamping Act, Manfact. specified the thickness of Gold in cases by Guaranteeing them for a amount of years, Ex: 5Yrs, 10yrs, 20 yrs, 25 yrs. and permanent being the highest Gold Filled Grade.

For detailed information on this see this link.

GOLD is marked by assay marks such as .585 assay is 14 karat and is stamped on the piece somewhere as it is done today. 10K, 14K, 18K.

Welcome to our message board and ask all the question you need answered.

Thanks to Kent for helping me with this answer.

Your case is gold filled, made from two thin layers of gold with a thicker layer of base metal sandwiched in between.

Incidentally, these cases should not be polished for obvious reasons.
