If you are going to concentrate on dollar watches, don't forget "New Haven". They manufactured dollar watches up into the 1950's. The one problem with New Haven is that they did not date or SN their movements. So you have to guess at the mfg date. Also don't forget NY Standard. They made a nice variety and they are still dirt cheap to buy. Tom

With my apology in advance for this question?s inevitable lack of sophistication: how might the difference in quality (?degree of excellence?) between a typical high-end ?dollar? watch (say a 7 jewel Ingersoll) and a typical low-end ?respectable? watch (say a 7 jewel Elgin) be characterized?

How about the Knickerbocker Watch Co., of New York? They imported Swiss and low cost production American watches. I have seen at least one watch with their name on the dial.

What about the Ingraham st regis? I have one that I got when I was a kid. Years ago!! Probably very cheap at the time. In fact there is one on ebay as i write this. Mine still works after 50 some years.

I have one with the paper dial signed, Flagg's Special. Looks like an Ingersoll movemnt but the case paper says, Flagg Watch Manfg. Co. 165 Tremont St. Boston, Mass.

Cheshire in the US, also you MUST have a Roskopf. It's to the dollar watch what the Pitkin and D H & D are to jewelled American watches.

Come to think of it, Pitkins were cheapos too.

Personally, I love the so-called dollar watches. I just got a 7 jewel Ingersoll. It is a real beauty in my eyes. They are ones that I have a real chance to get and I don't care if I break them while 'fixing' because I can afford them.

Give me more Bull's Eye, Scotties, Biltmores, etc.!

I'm a new member and while searching through some old postings I came acroos this one. I have a few dollar watches, know little about any watch I have but have happened into this site and in the past few days have learned a lot. One post that caught my eye was by Whit Joyner on 3/9/2001 and he mentioned a Bannatyne & said if you could find one. I have one in the original box #203209 The Guarantee / Directions paper inside has Sept. 15 1910 as the date of sale. It's written in pencil, not sure if that was writtrn at time of sale. Anyway the watch, box and paper are in excellent shape. If you are keeping records you can add this to you list.

Thanks Tom for posting the pictures of my Bannatyne. I dont't know who Web Horolgy is that stated "one I will never own" don't give up so easily. This one was found in a local antique street fair about 12 yrs. ago. I knew they were uncommon, but reading some of the previous post in this thread before I posted having one,and from some private e-mails since this was posted, I gather there are not very many out there. Anyway I hope these pictures are helpful to those who are a lot more knowledgeable about watches than I am. I just have fun looking through boxes, antique stores, estate & garage sales for something I can afford & enjoy.
