Hello jsin,

I am certain that the watch that you have is a typical movement for the period with an indirect drive sweep seconds hand. The sweep seconds pinion is an idler, driven by a large wheel running off an extended top pivot on the third wheel arbor. One peculiarity of this system is that the sweep seconds pinion requires a tension spring to prevent it from jumping around as you describe. This tension spring may be a./ missing b./ broken or 3./ out of adjustment. If it is missing or broken, you may have a problem as you will have to be talking someone into parting with a scarce component from a parts watch. If the spring simply requires adjustment, the answer may be somewhat simpler. I suggest you find a shop you feel you can trust and have it looked at.

Regards,
Doug S.
