No, not mine <LOL>!!
We have an octagonal short drop wall clock - The outer edge of dial numbers 1 - 31. Maker unknown at this point. Picked it up at an auction. Runs like a champ! Keeps time & date accurately.

This clock has...shall we say....character. Most might think its a "dog", but we love its aged, weathered look; and its perfect in the room where it hangs.

So here's my question: How can I stabalize the dial paint? Its chipped off in several places and I can see it "bubbling" - ready to chip - in other places. I don't want to have the dial "restored". I'd like to keep it just like it is. But I know that as as time goes on it will get worse & worse.

Is there anyting I can do to stay the hand of time on this dial?

Thanks for any help,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

In your place I would try several thin coats of something like Krylon "Crystal Clear" acrylic aerosol coating. Your hardware store has it. I have not tried it for holding old paint together, but am betting it will help more than hurt.

A customer has a similar looking clock with the bezel and glass missing. A matching bezel could not be found, so a new dial pan/bezel set were installed. I recycled the old dial pan for another use. It had a paper dial, and got 3 coats of Krylon. As you can see by the attached image, it's in a pretty extreme environment now. After several months, I see no signs of degradation.

Before anyone starts screaming; The clock was a cheap, 31 day, Korean reproduction.

Tom & Phil - thanks! Great help (and I chuckled a little over the "screaming" clause  )

My husband said he thought Krylon would do the job - and based on both your feebacks (and links), it looks like he was right again !!

P.S., Don't know what we'd do w/o the NAWCC & this fab website. Kudo's for an extremely helpful and EZ to use site - Well done web site developers!
