Hi,
Anyone know where I can obtain a trademark reference book covering early Swiss watch and
watchcase maker's marks?
Regards, Barry

The most complete and comprehensive book on that subject is
Kathleen Pritchard, Swiss Timepiece Makers
copublished by NAWCC and available through the NAWCC museum shop[ at nawcc.org

Hi,
Thank you for your advice.
The specific maker's mark, which I am trying to identify, is not illustrated in Pritchard.
I have emailed you a scan of the mark, which is J & Co. in a circle, within a Maltese cross outline with J M D D letters, one letter in each arm of the cross.
I do have the Pritchard books, which are very good, but they are not specific on all maker's marks.
I also have "Trade Marks of the Jewelry and Kindred Trades" Third edition, which has a section on watch & watch case marks, but these are mainly U.S. marks.
I have been trying to help out a new fellow, Andy Ross, who inherited a couple of nice watches, one of which I was able to identify for him and the other watch is the one in question.
He has been posting questions on the various watch boards and has now become addicted to pocket watches, joined the NAWCC and is keen to identify his watch.
The watch is an 18K gold hunter, minute repeater/chronograph with a silver coat of arms, which we have identified as that of the Sandoz family, applied as an emblem over a section of the movement.(The Sandoz crest has been verified)

As he appears to be a nice chap and is prepared to go to a lot of trouble to identify his watch, I have been trying to find out what I can for him.
I have been through, "Trade marks of the Jewelry and Kindred Trades"
3rd Edition" without finding the mark.
Although I did find a mention in Pritchard regarding the use of the registered mark, M.D.D. as being used by Ditisheim & Co.
I also looked up possibles who may have used J & Co. and found one with a connection to the Sandoz name.
Jacot, Ami = A.F.JACOT - SANDOZ 1829 - 1883 SANDOZ was the family name of JACOT'S wife.
There is also a reference to JACOT & CIE., La Chaux de Fonds 1919 - 1928.
However, at this time, I have no information on what marks they actually used.
Then I thought about it for a while and looked at the J M D D wondering if it actually started at J
( for the Jacot in the J&Co.) and I decided to look for the maker's mark of M.D.D.
This led me to DITISHEIM & CO., who are on record as having used M.D.D. on a flag as their maker's mark. This mark was registered by Maurice Ditisheim in 1894.
So, we have a JACOT & CIE., La Chaux de Fonds 1919 - 1928. which MAY have used J & Co. as their mark, and a probable connection back to JACOT-SANDOZ, A.F., Le Locle 1829-1883 which shows a link to the family name of Sandoz.
Plus the registered maker's mark letters M.D.D. of DITISHEIM & CO. 1894.
From the above information, gleaned from Pritchard, we could deduce that perhaps the J & Co is the mark of JACOT & CIE. (Anglicised??), and that the
J M D D is made up from the J initial, in JACOT, plus the M.D.D registered mark of DITISHEIM 1894.
This is only conjecture at this point, but in the absence of a trademark search, this is where I am up to so far.
I note the Cie V Co. but I see the CO. used with a great many entries in Pritchard connected with Swiss watch companies and it would appear that they used both terms.
Phil Priestly has searched for me also and replied;
REGRET MARK NOT IN THE 3 BOOKS I HAVE IN MY LIBRARY:-
K. PRITCHARD - SWISS COMPANIES 2 VOLS
K. KOCHMANN - CLOCK & WATCH TRADEMARK INDEX EUROPEAN ORIGIN
ROY EHRHARDT - TRADE MARKS, WATCHCASE, POCKET WATCHES, PRECIOUS STONES.
When I told him of my search results, he replied;
I ALSO NOTED THE J M D D AND THOUGHT OF JACOT AND M.D.D FOR DITISHEIM.
This may be the answer, but I would like to check it against a known maker's mark register to confirm or deny.
Best regards, Barry
