Your watch has probably been magnetized & just needs to be demagnetized. It shouldn't be too big a deal to take care of - just find a watchmaker that does work on the premises (as opposed to a jeweler that sends their work out), and they should be able to take care of it without too much fuss.

Ordinary magnetization is not a real problem, but it usually only causes erratic timekeeping and all you need is someone with a demagnetizer, which should be anyone that does watch repair. It is very simple and should cost no more than the smallest service fee.

However, you seem to be saying the watch has completely stopped, and this causes me to wonder a little. Was it a strong magnet? If so, I guess it's possible that the hairspring has gotten tangled or hung on something, but I can't say I've ever seen it happen. If you open the back of the watch, does the balance wheel (the big wheel with screws around the edge) oscilate freely?

Regards,
Mike

I must say I've never heard of anyone taking a magnet to a watch before and I thought it was interesting. I put a strong magnet to three different watches. All of them stopped. I thought maybe one would overbank but they didn't. Al of them started running again with a quick jerk of the wrist. I demagnetized them and all are running and keeping correct time. In any event, the watch has to go to a repair shop and be demagnitized.
Good Luck,
Brian C.
