I have inherited a pocket watch which came into the family on Dec 25th 1905. It is a triple chimer. Chimes the hours in low notes, chimes the 15 min intervals in high-low notes and chimes the extra min in high notes.
The mark on the case is designed to look like a flower pot with four flowers that look like the letter D. In the flower pot has the letters H W
enclosed and there is a serial number of 14436

Can anyone tell me who made this pocket watch.

Without a picture of the mechanism or any names on the watch it is difficult to know who made it. You have described a minute repeater, most of which are fairly high quality watches and are almost entirely of European (usually Swiss) manufacture. The case marks are those of the DuBois Watch Case Company of New York, one of the better case makers. They are known for the fine cases they made for both American and imported watch mechanisms. It was probably cased for one of the better jewelers.

Thank You for the information.

Can you tell me what the letter H W mean.

The four flowers with "D"s are the usual DuBois mark. I am not sure about the flowerpot. Can you post or send a photo of the case mark? A picture of the movement might also generate some opinions or information.

John sent me some pictures of his watch and the case mark and, as I suspected, the "flower pot" is a stylized "W" and is part of the mark for a gold case from Hayden W. Wheeler & Co. -- this one made for them by the Dubois Watch Case Co. I do not recognize the repeater movement, but perhaps someone else has an idea who made it.

Hi John,

As far as the movement is concerned, my guess is Le Coultre & Co produced it. It bears a strong resemblance to the styles they produced as referenced from the Complete guide to watches.

Also in the picture, there seems to be some engraving on the repeater mechanism near the hammers? Can you tell what this might be?

If the repeater movement was made by Le Coultre, it will often be signed under one of the hammers. Gently push aside each hammer with a toothpick to see if there is an identifying signature on the plate.

I looked under the hammers and did not find any signature. I did find the word SWISS stamped on the movement. The word that is out of focus is the word ADJUSTED and the number 25215. I did notice that the gears seem to be gold anodized and the teeth of the entry and exit pallet of the escarpment are cut rubies
