I'm in search of pinion wire for centerwheel repair of U.S.W.14s Royal Gold KW.(Or another wheel ? most likely scarce)
Need 10 leaves, .105"/2.66mm OD, .3"Length

Any known sources? Thanks, Paul

You may be looking through old watchmaker findings for a long time before you locate pinion wire. Even if you do find some, it may not be the exact size. In the old days, I think watchmakers often had to use over-size pinion wire and then use the rounding-up tool to reduce the size of the wheel enmeshed with the new pinion.

Have you considered re-pivoting the original pinion? Henry Fried describes the process in one of his books, I think you will find it in Fried's Bench Practices for Watchmakers. If you can remove the temper and get everything lined up in your lathe, the process works well. However, it takes time because you must go slow and constantly withdraw the drill and brush it off with oil so the pivot drill will not brake.

Good luck.

Greg.

Thanks for the input, Problem is a leave has split off the full length of pinion. This
is a back set kewind with a hole down the middle of pinion, Theres not enough meat to cut away the remaining leaves and press another bored out pinion on(not much differance between pivot and root dimensions) I,ve thought about trying to rebuild the missing leave, durability? .Guess that I'll start from scratch.(Another fleabay
gamble,But maybe next time)
Reguards,Paul
