Before the 1920s, most watches were not cased at the factory. The customer would choose a case and a movement and the jeweler would join them.
To those interested in pocket watches, the important part is the movement. We also have much more detailed records about production dates on the movements and virtually no information about the production of the cases. For this reason we need the serial number engraved on the back of the movement. You already stated it was a Waltham.
