I have heard that there are sources who are capable of modifying a conventional solid case back to a display back.

I have a nice Waltham 18s 23j 1892 Vanguard that I'd like to be able to place in a display back case and I have a case I think would work fine for that.

I'd appreciate any information on whether this can be done and if so any recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Duane,

Welcome the the NAWCC Message Board!

The short answer is yes, it can be done.

I don't know the case you have in mind, but unless you have the equipment to do this yourself it's probably going to cost enough that you could just put the money toward a vintage saleman's sample case and preserve the original. You can usually find one for under 75 bucks and they work great.

Just one preservation fanatic's opinion.

Could you screw a matching front bezel on the back of a standard open case?

I would definately buy a display case rather than ruin regular case. The only exception might be if the back of the existing case is damaged so badly that it isn't feasible to have it repaired, but then it probably wouldn't be feasible to have it made into a display case.

The case I have is damaged in the center of the back pretty much beyond repair and that's what made me think of the possibility of turning it into a display case. Otherwise I'm afraid it's scrap. The rest of the case is A-OK and it seems a shame to let it go to waste.

If I could find a matching back by it's lonesome I'd definitely consider putting that on but I haven't been able to find anything even close.

I don't have the wherewithall / tools to do it myself or I'd definitely give it a try. That's why I thought of the possibility of someone else who might be able to do it.

Thanks guys.

I have a good case that I thought would make a good display case and thought about it but it definitely seemed a bad idea so I've decided saving the unsaveable makes a LOT more sense. :-)
