Hello,
I'm having difficulty determining which balance staff is needed for a friend's Illinois.
It appears to be a 12s and is marked Santa Fe Special on the movement. The serial number is 4925290 and it is a 21 jewel. I've looked at the chart at Dashto.com, but the drawings are so similar that I think dimensional differences are the only way to determine the proper staff.
Does anyone have any ideas that might help?
Thanks, Jim.

Jim,

Welcome to the NAWCC Message Board. Nowhere else will you find such a concentration of topics that will pique your interest in watches.

If you will send the serial number of the watch to your supplier, they should be able to provide you with the correct staff for the Illinois. Let us know how you make out.

Put one in the other day. There is only one that fits it. Factory number 47615 or old number 1425. Pivot is 11.5.

Also from the Bestfit system it is Bottle 87.

According to your serial number and Meggers and Ehrhardt "American Pocket Watches, Vol 2 Illinois Watches" you have a 12 size, 21 jewel, model 1, grade 279. The "Illustrated Manual of American Watch Movements" by The E & J Swigart Co. the 47613, 47614 and 47615 staffs were used for model 1.

47313 and 47314 are described for single roller, small collet. Grade 279 is double roller.

47615 is for Double roller, small collet 1st-6th models. Dimensions:
length 4.42 mm
Bal Seat 1.11
Hairspring seat 0.76
Roller Seat 0.90-0.44
Hub Thickness 0.40 mm
pivot 0.095, .10 and .105 mm

It always pays to check the dimensions of the staff presently in the watch. If they do not match the numbers I have given you within say 0.02 mm, then we can check again.

Good luck
Don
