There are detail discussions on hairlines in dials you can get to using the FIND feature and searching on hairlines.

General consensus is: 1) Not taking dial feet screws all the way out when pulling the dial, 2)over tightening the dial feet screws, 3)expansion of the metal disc and the enamel at different rates going from cold to hot environment, 4)dropping the dial or watch.

There is also some good advice on cleaning the hairlines on this board. Soaking in Comet liquid cleaner "safe for porcelain" has worked for me.
